Leaving the WhatsApp group

A WhatsApp export is a .zip nobody ever opens. Drop it here and the photos sort themselves by date, so the group gets its memory back.

The problem

Photos are compressed, videos expire from phones, and nothing is findable. The summer of 2022 is still in there, thirty thousand messages up.

The group only notices when somebody changes phone. Part of the shared memory then goes dark, and nobody chose that.

The export

In WhatsApp: open the conversation, then More, then Export chat, with media. You get a .zip by email or in your files.

Drop that .zip into your Space. We open the .txt and the photos inside it, read the dates, and sort everything newest first.

What changes

Nobody has to leave WhatsApp. Everyday talk can stay there; what matters gets written somewhere that keeps it.

A Space holds four things: Albums by date, Articles with comments, a shared Agenda and Polls. Nothing else, ever.

The way out

Export gives you photos by year, Articles as text, the Agenda as .ics and Polls as CSV. Open formats, readable without us.

That is the only guarantee that matters: staying is a choice you make again each year, not a door closing.
